Are There Harmful Chemicals in my Ejuice Flavorings?

The e-juice has simple ingredients. You can either find one with vegetable glycerin or one with propylene glycol, and sometimes a mixture of both, plus flavoring and nicotine. However, for the flavoring, there is so much that goes into it. And for that reason, there has been so many questions from users as well as various research and studies to ascertain if ejuice flavoring contain dangerous chemicals or not.

One study was published on the Tobacco Control Journal and it showed some high exposure levels to certain elements found in flavorings could lead to respiratory irritation. However, the chemicals found in this flavorings are the same as those used in foods, as additives. This means that FDA has certified the ingredients and ascertain that they are safe to consume

However, the researchers argued that the flavorings raise concern for the safety of users and there is dire need for regulations today more than before. The researchers say that the chemicals are more dangerous when you inhale them because they are through the e-cig, than when they are consumed in food.

Serious inhalation of such ingredients has not been studied in depth, not much at all. Another study done by Dr. James Pankow a distinguished professor of chemistry and civil and environmental engineering at the Portland State University. He and his team analyzed the types and levels of flavor chemicals used in thirty various refillable e-juice such as a broad variety of famous flavors such as menthol, tobacco, vanilla, cherry, coffee, chocolate, cotton candy, apple and bubble gum.

In most of the liquids that were tested, 17 out of 30 tests, the flavors chemicals totaled to 1 percent of the refill e-juice volume.

So, all in all, it is safe to say the flavoring chemicals are not dangerous to human consumption.
